Checkerboard ≠ background

The grey-and-white grid only shows where pixels are empty. It isn't saved into the file.

PNG files are bigger

A PNG can be larger than the source JPG or WebP. If you compress it for a website, use a tool that preserves transparency and check the edges afterwards.

Does my image need to be a PNG already?

No. Upload a JPG, PNG or WebP. You always get a PNG back, because JPG can't store transparency.

Why do I see a checkerboard?

It's a standard way to show empty pixels. Your download contains transparency, not the checkerboard.

Why is there a faint halo around my subject?

Soft or blurry edges can keep a little of the old background color. Preview on a dark color and use Erase to clean it.

Which files can I use, and how big?

JPG, PNG and WebP images up to 10 MB and 25 megapixels (for example 6000 × 4000 px). Animated GIF / WebP and HEIC aren't supported yet.

What happens to my images?

To remove the background, your image is uploaded over an encrypted connection and processed in the cloud. The uploaded image and the result expire 24 hours after upload. Expired files are permanently deleted during daily cleanup, normally within the following 24 hours.

Is it really free? Do I need an account?

Yes. Removing a background, refining it and downloading the PNG is free and needs no account or email.
